The 2016 Maxima

So what's the big deal about the 2016 Nissan Maxima? Now in it's eighth generation, the 2016 Maxima is an interesting new full-size sedan in it's own right. Here are five of the most interesting things to know about the redesigned four-door.

1. "Maxima" is Nissan's longest running name continuous nameplate
Loyal customers are important to the Nissan Maxima’s continued success, and that’s for good reason: the Maxima is the longest-running nameplate in the Nissan lineup. The Z sports car has technically been around for longer overall, but a gap from 2000-2002 means that the Maxima still holds the title for the longest-running continuous model. The first Nissan Maxima arrived in 1981, and this 2016 version is the eight-generation of the sedan.

2.  The SR is more than just a tape-and-stripe package
To preserve the Nissan Maxima’s reputation for relatively sporty dynamics, Nissan made sure that upgrades for the sport-oriented SR trim go beneath the skin. The 2016 Nissan Maxima SR wears different wheels and tires than other Maxima trims, and stiffer suspension tuning makes for less body roll and tighter handling. The SR’s interior is also trimmed in real Alcantara, not just micro suede, and comes with an additional damper in the front suspension to take out excess vibration caused by the stiffer suspension tune.

3.  It share a color with the GT-R
Though you can’t draw too many parallels from the Maxima sedan to the insane Nissan GT-R supercar, there’s one clear commonality between the two cars: a dark blue exterior color. The “Deep Blue Pearl” hue is shared between the two cars, and can’t be found on any other products in Nissan’s lineup.

4. The design was toned down a bit for production
2016 Maxima’s design went through many stages before settling on the final production version. Many of these designs featured an even more extreme and aggressive front end, but that the team eventually decided to go for a slightly more streamlined grille shape because the other designs were too polarizing.

5. It's significantly stiffer than before
Nissan engineers reportedly benchmarked expensive sports cars for the Maxima's structural rigidity and stiffness targets, and the new model is 25 percent stiffer than its predecessor as a result. Along with the aforementioned damper for the SR model, all 2016 Maxima sedans use a stiffer and lighter strut tower brace, along with high-strength steel throughout, ultra high-strength steel used in the B-pillars, and aluminum used in the hood to save weight.
